Then Came The CJ – The First Civilian Jeep

The first Jeep was fostered and conceived in Butler, PA, by the American Bantam Car Company. Willys would shortly thereafter win the Army’s primary contact for building the Willys (the MB) with Ford also receiving a contract to build the vehicle (the GPW) during WW II. From 1941 to 1945 over 700,000 of these vehicles were built by the two companies. The Willys would then go through a transition into a civilian Jeep, thus the beginning of the CJ.

Willys began experimenting with a civilian jeep (CJ) version in 1944, the first one being the CJ-2. They were almost identical to the Willys MB with the major exceptions being larger headlights, a column shifter, and side mounted spare tires. They were oftentimes referred to as Agrijeeps and there were only about 36 actually produced. Willys was targeting the farming community with their first efforts to introduce the Jeep into the civilian population. The first real commercial effort of the Jeep was the CJ-2A, which was manufactured from 1945-49. From looking at advertisements for the CJ-2A you can see that these first civilian Jeeps were being sold primarily as an all- purpose vehicle to the American farmer, and hence the name Agrijeep for the CJ-2.

The initial production of the CJ-2A relied heavily upon MB components. Originally the CJ-2A’s employed the full floating rear axles, windshield adjusting arms, exhaust systems, and parking lamps that were used on the Willys MB. The CJ-2As looked like a Willys MB with a side mounted spare tire, column shifter and full sized headlights.

It was only later on when the Willys MB stockpile of parts was in serious decline that changes were made to the CJ-2A. It was during this phase that the column shifter was discontinued and the Dana / Spicer axles were introduced replacing the full floating rear axle. Dana / Spicer and Jeep would have a long lasting relationship from this point to 2005.

Other changes were primarily cosmetic and resulted in the addition of chrome trimmings and later on the introduction of more exterior colors to select from. Initially there were only two color choices for the CJ-2A and they were Pasture Green and Harvest Tan. The first colors added were Princeton Black, Normandy Blue, Michigan Yellow and Harvard Red. Later on Picket Gray, Luzon Red, Potomac Gray, Olive Drab and Emerald Green were added. Eventually Harvard Red, Picket Gray, Normandy Blue and Michigan Yellow were dropped. The changes initiated with the CJ-2A would see more development with the next CJ version the CJ-3A, which was introduced in 1949.

The CJ-3A was the final run of the lower hood flat fender CJ. Only a few changes were made from the CJ-2A to the 3A and most were visual ones. The windshield became a one-piece design with the vent right below it. The CJ-3A was manufactured for four years (1949-53). During this time approximately 132,000 units were manufactured, with a stripped Farm Jeep available during 1951-53. The “Farm Machine” had a standard drawbar and Power Train Output. In it’s last year of production (1953), the CJ-3A was built along with the new high-hood, F-head engine, CJ-3B.

It was also during 1953 when Willys-Overland was sold to the Kaiser Company, who then became the owner and maker of Jeeps. The first higher hood Jeep, the CJ-3B, was essentially a CJ-3A with the taller F-head engine fitted and a higher hood to give it the needed clearance for the motor. It appears that it was originally intended as an interim model, but it stayed in production from 1953 up through 1968, and was offered as a short wheelbase option. Only a few thousand of these were built a year with a total of over 155,000 assembled in the U.S.

The longest running production Jeep is the CJ-5, which was produced from 1954 through 1983, twenty-nine years. This was the Kaiser Company’s first overseen production model and it proved to be a huge success. Over 603,000 were manufactured, making them the most popular CJ by far. It was during the successful run of the CJ-5 when the American Motors Corporation purchased Kaiser Jeep in 1970. Special editions of the CJ-5 were made of this model including the Super Jeep and the Golden Eagle. Various options were offered for the CJ-5 during its run including a V-8 engine and rear limited slip differentials. When referring to a CJ this is the version most everyone thinks about.

There were other CJ models offered during the popular run of the CJ-5. The CJ-6 was manufactured from 1955 to 1975. It was made to offer customers an option of a longer vehicle. The CJ-6 was basically a CJ-5 stretched an extra 20 inches. This version offered a lot more room for storage but still delivered the Jeep offroad capabilities. Less than 51,000 of these were made. The CJ-5A and the CJ-6A were also made during the CJ-5 era. These models were produced during 1964 through 1967. They were an attempt to capture an audience interested in a sportier version of the CJ-5. The CJ-5A and CJ-6A had a column shifter, T-90 transmission, wheelhouse cushions, 2-stage variable springs, and chrome-plated hood hinges, outside mirrors, taillights and a center mounted license plate bracket. Later on in 1965 a V6 was standard along with bucket seats. These models never gained popularity, as the American public was not interested in paying a premium for the upgrades.

The CJ-7 was built from 1976 through 1986 and offered somewhat of a compromise between the CJ-5 and the CJ-6 wheelbase. The CJ-7 was just long enough for room and comfort but short enough to get down and dirty on the trail. It was proven to be a popular vehicle on all fronts. Approximately 379,000 units were built in its ten years of production. The 1976-79 models were available with the high-powered AMC 304 V-8. The CJ-7’s extra length of wheelbase also allows for a wider option of drive train modifications over its predecessor the CJ-5.

From 1981 through 1985 the last of the CJ’s were made, the CJ-8 Scrambler! AMC built the Scrambler as a pickup with a 103-inch-wheelbase. It came in soft and hard top versions. Despites it’s popularity today, the Scrambler was a very modest success back in its manufacturing period. Only a little over 27,000 of these models were built. The next civilian Jeep made would be the YJ Wrangler in 1987. The introduction of the YJ would close the book on the illustrious and famous CJ line of Jeeps.

Chrysler Group: Business as Usual

The Chrysler Group despite the sober news of its upcoming buyout seems unaffected by all the controversies. As a matter of fact, it is preparing a stream of new products for Ireland and UK in an effort to increase its market share upwards. The automaker is planning to introduce up to eight new models for the Jeep, Chrysler, and Dodge brands for this year.

Most of the new models that are heading UK and Ireland were shown at Detroit like for example the new Dodge Avenger which was unveiled at the Detroit auto show and same with the D-segment saloon that possess the retro 1970s muscle car looks and shares its name with one of the bastion of Chrysler’s Irish range in the ‘70s.

The Avenger shares the same platform as the Chrysler Sebring. The Avenger is scheduled to hit Ireland market in June and will also be offered in a convertible version complete with a retractable hard-top. Both the Avenger and the Sebring are created to appeal to different types of buyers. The Sebring is expected to be the choice among older customers who appreciates conservative designs while the Avenger is designed to target younger buyers and those performance-oriented buyers.

The Avenger is going to be introduced as Dodge’s third model, following the Caliber hatchback and the Nitro small MPV which is scheduled to come out in July. All the Dodge models destined for Ireland are made in US. The Chrysler adds a high-performance version of the 300C Touring, the SRT-8 which is powered by a 6.1 liter HEMI V8 engine.

Lamborghini Murcielago

Lamborghini Murcielagois the most fantastic, dramatic, extreme super car. If you want to make a statement, get a 200mph-plus Murcielago. Even Ferraris pale into the background alongside it – particularly if it’s one of the famous vivid yellow ones.  It was launched way back in 2001, as the first Lamborghini to be developed under Audi ownership. This in itself was significant, because it meant the company could call upon all the German brand’s expertise in quality and reliability. Previous Lamborghinis were known as being a bit fragile and temperamental; this car marked the turning point.

Extreme in every way sums up the mighty Murcielago. The first cars came with a huge 6.2-litre V12 engine that produced 580hp at high revs. It sounds like nothing else, particularly in the upper ranges, and I know people who buy it for the noise it makes alone.

A complex four-wheel drive transmission distributed this power, through either a six-speed manual or semi-automatic gearbox. The former can be hard work, so buyers often prefer the latter. I always warn them to buy as late as possible though. Lamborghini was constantly improving the set-up of the E-Gear system, eventually honing it into a very impressive set-up.

The styling of a largely carbon-fibre body is just incredible. This is why people buy the Murcielago. It’s big, extreme, wide, low, and aggressive – it looks like a Stealth fighter, particularly when the scissor-type doors are swung up and open. At speed, the fighter jet analogy continues, as two air intakes electronically fold out of the side rear panels – a fantastic touch. There’s also an electronic pop-up rear wing.

Inside, it’s not quite an Audi in its control layout – here; the Gallardo is better and more modern. But Lamborghini didn’t do a bad job, and it’s a lot better than the Diablo. It’s still rather tight for space in there, though, and it remains only a two-seater. Being 6ft 4in myself, I can fit snuggly in the coupe but look a bit like noddy in the spider!

Of course, if you think this is extreme, wait until you see the Roadster model, which came in 2004. This was Lamborghini’s answer to owners who were calling for even more ‘show’ with the first open-top Lambo for a decade, they really could expose themselves.

It’s hardly a practical option though. The roof is incredibly complicated to fit and remove – and, unbelievably, the car can’t be driven at more than 100mph with the roof up. It’s normally the other way around, which means the market for this model is even more specialist.

While the early 6.2-litre cars are the cheapest, buyers prefer the 2006 models if they can stretch to it. This was the year the Murcielago’s V12 was boosted to 6.5 litres, and 640bhp. These cars can be found by their new name – Lamborghini Murcielago LP640, with LP standing for ‘Lontitudinari Posteriari ‘referring to the rear-mid in-line position of the engine.

The LP models received a slight facelift front and rear, and Lamborghini also restyled the interior with some Audi-like quality and usability improvements. There was a better stereo – and, for when music was not enough, a new exhaust to create even more noise. The seats were repositioned as well, to try and carve out a bit more room inside. Oh, and there were more tweaks to the semi-auto and suspension.

One function the crowd conscious driver likes is the Launch Control device that came on this edition. Basically, this allows people to conduct the perfect standing start, guaranteeing to hit 60mph in the claimed 3.4 seconds. This is hard on the clutch and transmission, so cars fitted with it should be investigated carefully. But there’s no denying the showy nature of the car makes it a nice addition!

There was also a very desirable option copied from Ferrari – a glass cover for the mighty engine. Buyers love it. The last in the line and the most extreme Murcielago is the one that makes the most incredible poster car – the extreme LP 670-4 SuperVeloce – the Murcielago SV. This has 670bhp, weighs 100kg less, the option of a massive racecar-like rear wing, exotic materials, and even the option of matt paint. The market for these is small but, for some, it’s the only choice.

Mind you, while the Murcielago has huge emotional appeal, it actually has very little retail appeal. Very few are sold – it’s the ultimate supercar from its looks, engine and concept, but this sheer exclusivity works against it on the used market. The Spyder is virtually impossible to sell. When the soft-top demands 20 minutes to put up and down – well, car buyers view it with similar regard to an old Jeep Wrangler.

Therefore, the Murcielago really is usually the fifth or sixth car in their collection. For these people, buying one involves emotion, the world’s finest V12, and the scissor doors, why else is there an entire industry now devoted to converting Gallardos to get these door hinges! It will always hold a special place for me, but commercially, as a car dealer, you can’t justify it. Very, very few dealers are now willing to put their own money into one. Toyota Overtakes Ford Once Again

Toyota’s forward surge continues as the Japanese car manufacturer overtook Ford once again in terms of sales for the month of May. The biggest Japanese carmaker posted a 14 percent increase in sales as compared to last year’s May sales figures. The increased sale for Toyota marked the third time in seven months that they have overtaken Ford in the United States auto market.

This moves the Japanese carmaker closer to becoming the second largest car manufacturer in the United States. This is because the Ford Motor Company is still struggling with selling their large vehicles like their pickup and SUV units. The company also reduced the number of vehicles allocated for rental companies. That step further reduced their monthly sales.

Analyst Rebecca Lindland for Global Insight commented that Toyota will continue its growth while Ford is expected to struggle. “We’re going to continue to see Ford struggle as they go through their transition period,” she said. “We’re going to continue to see Toyota pushing forward.”

In terms of the performance of the United States auto industry, a 5 percent increase was posted last month. Last month marked the highest number of vehicles sold so far this year at a total of 1.56 million cars and light trucks. Major car manufacturers increased their sales except for Ford which gave way to the five percent increase in overall sale. Combined, Asian car manufacturers grabbed 41.4 percent of the US auto market and that is an increase of 1.2 percent as compared to last year for the same period. In contrast, American automakers’ control of the market dropped by one percent as compared to last year for the same period. The Big Three cornered 51.9 percent of the US auto market for the month of May.

Toyota sold 269,023 cars and light trucks combined last month. That sales output marked the best May figures in the history of the car manufacturer. The record was set with the help of the tripled sale of the popular gas-electric hybrid Toyota Prius. The Japanese outfit sold more than 20,000 units of the Prius for the month of May. The popularity of the Prius is evident in the fact that for the month of May, it was the ninth best-selling vehicle in the United States and acts like a Toyota headlight in showing the way forward for the company. In contrast, Ford posted a 6.8 percent sales plunge. Last month marked the seventh consecutive month that Ford posted a sales drop. Surprisingly, General Motors posted a 9.6 percent sales increase.

Meanwhile, DaimlerChrysler posted the second month of sales increase. The company recently agreed to sell the ailing American auto brand. The Chrysler Group though posted a 4.3 percent sales increase, thanks to the increased sales of the new Dodge Nitro and the redesigned Jeep Wrangler. Both of these vehicles are what the company looks for to once again attract car buyers to the brand.

According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), the increasing price of gasoline which has reached a record breaking $3.23 has turned away car buyers for months. In fact, US auto sale has only increased once before May and that was in March. Last month marked only the second month that the auto industry sale in the United States posted a positive number.
